Watts-Hillandale

Watts-Hillandale Florist — Luxury Flower Delivery to Durham’s Quiet Historic District

Watts-Hillandale sits just north of Duke’s East Campus, directly alongside Trinity Park but quieter — fewer through-streets, deeper lots, and a 27-acre hospital campus at the center of it that’s now home to the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. It’s a 446-building National Register Historic District of Craftsman bungalows, Tudor Revivals, Colonial Revivals, and the occasional Prairie Style home, all laid out under a mature hardwood canopy along Club Boulevard, Oval Drive, and Englewood Avenue. If Trinity Park is the busier academic neighborhood, Watts-Hillandale is the one where the professors actually want to live on the quieter streets.

The neighborhood and its residents

Watts-Hillandale was built in the 1910s through the 1930s around Watts Hospital — founded in 1895 by tobacco magnate George Washington Watts and the institution that eventually inspired the creation of Duke’s medical school. The hospital moved out in 1976, and the historic Spanish Mission campus became NCSSM — a selective residential high school that now anchors the neighborhood the way the hospital once did. Today’s residents are Duke faculty, physicians at Duke Hospital and the VA, academics, attorneys, and established families. West Club Boulevard holds the grander houses on deeper lots. Englewood Avenue has the bungalow-scale homes on smaller lots. Everywhere the canopy is tall and the traffic is low.

Designing for historic cottage and bungalow interiors

Craftsman and Tudor interiors have built-ins, beamed ceilings, and carefully proportioned rooms. A 1920s dining room was built for intimate seated dinners, not large-scale entertaining. The right flower for a Watts-Hillandale table is restrained, architectural, and sized to the room. My European training teaches exactly this: twenty stems with real structure will do more than a hundred stems piled into a vase, and the proportion matters more than the count. A low compote on a carved dining sideboard. A sculptural branch in a bungalow entryway. A mantel piece matched to the scale of the original mantel. Nothing that fights the architecture.

What we design for in Watts-Hillandale

Duke faculty entertaining and academic dinners. Watts-Hillandale dining rooms are made for eight-person seated dinners. Visiting scholars, department dinners, book-club anniversaries, research-team celebrations. We design low centerpieces at conversation height and seasonal pieces for the sideboard and entry.

High-end home entertaining. Many Watts-Hillandale households maintain standing floral orders — something fresh in the entry and the kitchen island every week or two. Seasonal palettes. Garden flowers in spring, branches and dahlias in autumn, proper holiday decor in December. No filler, no repeats.

Weddings and engagements. Weddings in Watts-Hillandale often happen at Duke Chapel (a walk across East Campus), Duke Gardens, or at home under the canopy. Rehearsal dinners in historic bungalows. Intimate ceremonies in restored back gardens. We build bridal bouquets, ceremony pieces, and reception centerpieces at that scale.

Corporate gifting to Duke offices. Many Watts-Hillandale residents are senior to Duke’s administrative offices or affiliated professional firms. We design corporate gifting arrangements delivered same-day to Duke’s East and West Campus offices, the Medical Center, and downtown firms.

Seasonal decor for historic homes. Christmas, Mother’s Day, Easter — these are seasons that Watts-Hillandale residents mark with fresh arrangements rather than boxed decorations. Wreaths proportioned to the front door, mantel pieces matched to the original millwork, spring garden arrangements for Easter brunch.
