Downtown Durham is what happens when a tobacco warehouse district gets rebuilt around a million square feet of restored historic buildings, two performing arts venues, a minor-league ballpark, and a tech corridor. The American Tobacco Campus — fourteen buildings built between 1874 and the 1950s, now offices, restaurants, plazas, and event spaces — sits at the center of everything. The Durham Performing Arts Center next door. The Bullpen and Durham Bulls Athletic Park. DPAC hosts over 180 performances a year. The result is a downtown that is actually busy, that actually has residents, and that has real restaurants — NanaSteak, Mateo, Counting House at 21c, Nana’s under Matt Kelly at American Tobacco, Durham Hotel rooftop. It is also one of the highest-density pockets of luxury condo and loft living in the Triangle.

Downtown Durham’s residents skew educated and professional — 86% in professional or administrative work, with a median age of thirty-five and 40% of adults between twenty-five and forty-four. Tech workers at American Underground, RTP commuters who’ve chosen to live in town instead, Duke faculty and staff in West Village and the Moore Building, empty-nesters downsizing into Brightleaf lofts. Two-bedroom lofts run to three thousand a month and up. The residents who order flowers downtown are mostly people with disposable income, a sharp eye, and little interest in generic grocery-store arrangements.

Designing for downtown interiors

West Village lofts have 22-foot ceilings, exposed brick, hardwood floors, and oversized warehouse windows. The Durham Hotel’s rooftop is concrete and sky. DPAC’s VIP rooms are black lacquer and stage lighting. None of these spaces work with a traditional florist-shop bouquet. They want architectural work — a tall sculptural branch in the corner of a 22-foot room, a pair of low matched pieces along a long bar, a structural cocktail-table centerpiece with real presence. My European training is built for exactly this kind of scale and restraint: twenty stems with technique and negative space doing more than a hundred stems ever could.

What we design for downtown

DPAC galas, opening nights, and VIP receptions. DPAC’s annual calendar includes Broadway tour opening nights, sponsor galas, and nonprofit fundraisers that use the VIP rooms and the plaza. We build entry installations and reception florals that read from across a room and photograph well for the event coverage.

American Tobacco Campus corporate events. The campus fills with ribbon cuttings, board dinners, client receptions, holiday parties, and investor events. We design arrangements that hold up under conference-room lighting and cocktail-hour traffic, and we deliver into the campus on schedule.

Boutique hotel events. The Durham Hotel runs rooftop weddings, cocktail parties, and private dinners. 21c Museum Hotel hosts private dining at Counting House and gallery-floor events. Unscripted Durham runs rooftop parties. Each of these venues asks for a different floral vocabulary. We know the buildings.

Restaurant openings and seasonal menus. Mateo, Nana’s, NanaSteak, Counting House, Queeny’s, and the wave of newer restaurants along Main and Parrish all host grand openings, wine dinners, Valentine’s bookings, and anniversary nights. We design table florals and entrance pieces that match the room.

Luxury residential housewarmings and standing orders. New move-ins at West Village, the Bullpen, the Carmichael, the Moore Building. We build housewarming arrangements, and we maintain standing weekly orders for loft residents who want something fresh in the kitchen and the living room without thinking about it.
