A neighborhood with its own shape

Forest Hills was laid out in 1923 as Durham’s first automobile suburb, and it still has that unhurried, driving-through-the-trees feel. The streets curve with the rolling land. Big hardwoods shade the sidewalks, and the houses sit back on generous lawns. The historic district is listed on the National Register, and many of its homes are Tudor Revival and Colonial Revival designs.

Durham architect George Watts Carr drew a good number of them. The best known is Pinecrest, the 1928 Tudor Revival house on West Forest Hills Boulevard. Forest Hills Park sits at the heart of the neighborhood with University Drive running beside it, and on a fine day it is full of people out walking.
